Ecosia: The Carbon-Free Search Engine

Here at Yora HQ, we’re always looking for ways to be more sustainable. We already source our renewable electricity exclusively from GoodEnergy™, we’re committed to recycling and composting wherever possible and we send all of our remaining waste off to make electricity (sending zero to landfill). And of course, we can’t forget to mention our environmentally friendly, insect-based dog food, that uses sustainable ingredients and plastic-free packaging.

Recently, we turned our eco-minded attention to basic office requirements, resulting in an amazing discovery; Ecosia.

Ecosia is a search engine but with major eco-credentials. 80% of its surplus income is given to non-profit organisations that focus solely on reforestation and conservationist projects. To generate funding for these projects, they use advertising, much like Google do, on words and phrases (but unlike other search engines they don’t sell your data to advertisers!).

They recognise themselves as a social corporation and as being Co2 negative.

One thing we love is their ongoing commitment to planting trees. At the time of publishing, Ecosia has already planted over 63,793, 820 trees in areas all around the world, but most importantly, in places they are needed most like rainforests and in damaged ecosystems.
