Summer Safety Tips for Dogs & Cats

Published date: 01 August 2024

With (hopefully) more warm days on the way, we thought it was high time we chatted about sun safety.

Keeping your furry friends safe during the summer days is so important, so here is our top advice for keeping your pets cool.

Avoid Over Exercising

Avoid walking your dog during the hottest parts of the day and remember to bring plenty of water on every walk. Our canine companions are at risk of becoming dehydrated very quickly, so they should be offered water frequently and given plenty of breaks.

Ultimately missing a walk won’t harm your dog, so if the risk is too high it is worth entertaining them at home instead.

Keep your Shed or Greenhouse Shut

Cats can sometimes retreat to quieter places to get away from the hustle and bustle of a sunny BBQ or social gathering in the garden.
Unfortunately, they run the risk of getting locked in and overheating. So, to avoid your cat or dog getting stuck, remember to keep your sheds and greenhouses firmly locked.

Give them Cool Treats!

What better way to cool your beloved furry friend down than with a delicious icy treat?

Yora Succulent Wet Pate can be mashed up and frozen in an old ice cube tray. Delicious frozen cubes of nutritious insect food are the perfect treat for a warm summer day.

If you are unable to take your dog out during the heatwave, creating homemade ice treats and interactive toys is a great way to keep them occupied and prevent boredom.

Invest in Cool Products

From mats to pools, there are plenty of pet-friendly cool products to help your pet stay comfortable.

However, keeping your pet cool doesn’t have to be expensive. There is much you can do with items you have at home.

• Old tea towels can be dampened and frozen to make an easy cool blanket for your pet to lie on.

• Freeze bottles of water and pop them in your pet’s crate or bed.

• Douse old rope toys in water and freeze. These are cooling and soothing for the teeth, a great option if you have a puppy!

• Draw the curtains and open windows in the room your pet stays in.

• If you have a fan, plug it in to circulate air around the room your pet spends most of their time in.

Say No to Sunburn!

Did you know dogs and cats suffer from sunburn too?

It’s a common misconception that fur protects our pet’s skin from damage, they can and do get burnt and even run the risk of developing skin cancer.

To avoid burning, keep your pet in the shade and regularly apply Pet Safe Sunscreen. Remember to pay close attention to the delicate areas such as the nose, tips of ears and the muzzle.

Keep in mind our human sunscreen can be dangerous for our pets, so always stick to pet-specific suncream.

Keep your Pet Well Groomed

Thick, long and double-coated breeds are at a higher risk of overheating.
These pets must be groomed regularly to reduce the loose undercoat. This allows air to flow easier between the skin and topcoat, keeping them cooler and reducing itching.

We hope you have a lovely and safe summer with your furry best friends. For more advice and information, read our other blogs.
